Trust – Firm belief in the integrity, ability, or character of a person; confidence or reliance
Communication – The exchange of thoughts, messages, or information, as by speech, signals, writing, or behavior
Compromise – A settlement of differences in which each side makes concessions
There are many ingredients that go into a healthy relationship, the first of which is trust. The lack or loss of trust kills or prevents more relationships than anything else. One of the first things I teach my clients about finding the right person is you have to possess the qualities you seek in another. If you want someone with a good body, you need to have a good body. If you want someone with a good sense of humor, you need to develop yours. If you want someone who is trustworthy, you need to be trustworthy. Opposites may attract in the beginning, but in the long run, we stay with those that are most like us, and with whom we believe we can trust.
Communication is the lifeblood of a relationship, without the proper quantity and quality, the relationship will die. The same is true of our bodies (see my “health” page). It’s important to note that your partners’ primary Love Language may be Quality Time defined by communication designed to understand what is most important to them. Time is our most valuable commodity and everyone at their core wants to be understood.
Because the environment in which we are raised and by and with whom shapes who we become, compromise in a relationship is essential. You are not going to always agree nor get what you want. I’m not suggesting that you change your core values or abandon your dreams. The key is being with someone that is willing to invest time and effort in supporting you in your values and dreams. Compromises usually come into play in raising children. Having children together is usually evidence that you’re committed to building a lifelong relationship.
It is in our nature to complicate things when it comes to relationships due to the rise of capitalism, selfishness and pride in society. That is why I started my consulting business. I will help you simplify and bring peace to your life regarding your relationships.
